The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Gaines Mill 7 June ‘64

I recd last night dear Mary your letter of the 5th & the nice bread sent me by Mrs. Haxall & Barton. You must tell the kind ladies they must not send me so many things. I fear they will deprive themselves of what is not necessary to me & may be to them. I am well now & have all that is needful to me. Tell Mrs. Randolph I have taken some of the blackberry today & find it very nice. I think though the sight of her would be more beneficial to me. You must take from the box sent by Hattie Harrison what you want & send me the balance. The tea & soap may be of use to you. I saw Fitzhugh yesterday. He was very well. I am full of gratitude to our Heavenly father for his preservation of all of our sons & nephews & especially for the safety of our dear Rob. May they all be preserved & feel to whom they owe it. You must give much love to Mary. when you write, & if you have the opportunity thank Hattie Harrison for me. I had an interesting visit from Dr. Hughes yesterday & am delighted to hear that all your symptoms are so favourable. He agrees with me in believing that you had better leave Richmond soon as you Can. I hope you will do so. I am glad to hear that Mary is so much better. Give much love to her, Agnes, Life, & all friends. May God preserve you all.

Truly & sincerely

R E Lee
