The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My dear Mary

I have recd your several notes but have not had an opportunity to reply to them. I am glad you have W. Carter with you I hope you will take good care of him & soon make him well. We require every one in the field we can get. I presume they have suffered every thing at Hickory hill & uncle Wms. Indeed I have heard that the enemy has taken every thing from them. It is lamentable in the extreme; You must thank the kind ladies for the nice bread. Tell them their remembrance of me is more comforting than their rolls & loaves. Little Sallie I understand had to run off to N.C. to get rid of her beaux. What is she going to do now? I must write & thank Mr Jackson for the pieces of cotton. I do not require night shirts. You had better keep them for day shirts, which I may require after awhile. I saw F & Rob yesterday on their way from one wing of the army to the other. My pen will not mark & I must stop. Give love to my daughters. How are the dear little cormorants? I hear they eat everything before them? I am glad their appetites are good. I hope you are doing well. I am well again thank God. May he in his infinite mercy keep you all under the shadow of his wings.

Truly & Constantly

R E Lee
