The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My precious Life

I have recd your note & grieve at the sickness of your poor mother. It is Cooler to day & I trust the change of temperature may be beneficial to her. You must give her a great deal of love & say I wish I Could see her & care for her. I fear both are beyond my power. It is impossible for me to leave here at this time, & I do not know when I shall be able. Her day of departure from Richmond must not be postponed on my account. I trust she will have a safe & prosperous journey & be much benefited by her visit to the Country. The sooner she leaves Richmond in my opinion the better. May God guard her & you all. I hope Mary is well again & that Agnes enjoys good health. Give my love to both & say I wish I Could bid them farewell. I trust we may meet in more happy times. For yourself accept my thanks for your remembrance of me & think of me always. I have no news. I would recommend you to restore Custis Morgan to his native woods. I admire his taste in going to see Miss Mary Triplett, but fear he will bite some of you very severely before you make up your mind to part with him. Good bye my precious child. Take good care of your mother & let me know how she is.

With kind regards to all friends

I am truly your father

R E Lee
