The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My dear Mary

I enclose the receipt for the last lot of socks &c. It seems Major Janny is absent. I have explained to Capt Shell what to do with them. I do not know what you had best do with the $200 given by Mrs Tabb. Perhaps the young mens christian association will disburse it for the benefit of the soldiers as well as any, or the Army association for relief of maimed soldiers, or some of the Hospitals. All want money. I cannot help you in the matter.

I requested Smith to give you some coupons which are current within the enemy’s lines. If you in the Course of the Campaign should by the of war fall within them they will be of value. Some of the Coupons are only current in the Confederacy. Those you had better have cashed or placed in bank to your credit. No one can tell what will be the result of the approaching Contest. We can only toil & trust. I must commit you & my dear children to a Merciful God knowing he will do all things right. I hope my dear Mary all will go well with you. You must express my thanks to Mrs Daingerfield & also to Mrs Letcher. I fear the former will work herself to death. Thank Margaret & Carrie for their kind notes & give much love to my dear daughters. I am glad to hear that Sally & Henry are better.

Very truly & affy

R E Lee
