The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My dear Mr Johnston

Your Note of the 12th inst. came by the mail of the last evening. Mrs Lee & myself would gladly accept your tempting invitations to be present at the wedding of your daughter,[1] and our son. But circumstances prevent our leaving home at this time for so long a journey. It would indeed be a source of much pleasure to us, to be present at the ceremony, and to form the acquaintance of a family that will be hereafter so closely connected with us. We hope & trust the young people will be happy, and that you & I, and all of us, will have cause to be thankful, having nothing to regret at the thus happy union so soon to be made. It will be at all times a comfort to us to have your daughter under our roof, and to receive her into our Family, as a daughter of our own, and ever took upon her as such.

Hoping in the course of time we shall meet, and know one another, altho’ we can’t be together on this interesting occasion you will please present our Love & congratulations to the young couple after the ceremony, and accept for Mrs Johnston, and yourself our kindest regards, & best wishes.

I am, with much regard

Yours very sincerely

S. S. Lee

PS

Do if you please give our best remembrances to Miss Floyd, and General and Mrs Joe Johnston, if they shd be with you,
