The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Monsieur

I have experienced so long your goodness as my professor that I beg you to accept this little volume as a feeble proof of my gratitude,--for to the interest you have taken in my progress and to your untiring efforts, I must attribute all my advancement. It gives me pleasure to accept the “Tragedies of Camille” which you have sent me. I shall be charmed to read them again. I shall endeavor, Monsieur, not to forget your instructions in the French language, but to profit by them as much as possible and also to prove to you that I am your very respectful and very grateful pupil.
