Engineer Department

Washington August 11, 1829

 

Engineer Order No. 8,

 

            Brevet 2nd Lieut Chas. Mason of the Corps of Engineers will report to the Superintendent of the Military Academy on or before the 1st of September next, for duty, at that institution.

            Brevet 2nd Lieut Robert E Lee of the Corps of Engineers will, by the middle of November next, report to Major Samuel Babcock of the Corps of Engineers, for duty at Cockspur Island, in the Savannah River, Georgia.

Source: Facsimile of orders issued from the Engineer Department of the United States Army to Brevet Second Lieutenants Charles Mason and Robert E. Lee who graduated from the military academy at West Point at the head and second from the head, respectively, of the class of 1829.

            The original document was for many years in the possession of Mary Josephine Mason Remey the daughter of Charles Mason. Now it is among the Remey and Mason Papers in the Division of Manuscripts in the Library of Congress.
