The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Head Qrs.        Army of Northern Va.

Atlee’s, 6 PM. 28 May 64

Hon James A. Seddon

Secty of War, Richmond Va.

Sir:       The army is in front of this position extending towards Totopotomy Creek. As far as I can ascertain none of the enemy have advanced south of that Creek. I believe that he is assembling his army behind it. Genl Fitz-Lee’s division of Cavalry engaged the enemy’s cavalry near Hawe’s shop, about noon to-day & drove them back upon their infantry, which prisoners stated to be the 5th & 6th corps. I have not however received very definite information as yet, either as regards their positions or numbers.

I am with respect Yr Obt Svt.

                       R . E. Lee

                                 Genl.
