I have received your several reports of the late operations of the troops under your command, and of the cavalry under Genl Hampton. I am much gratified at the results obtained, and pleased with the good conduct and courage displayed by officers and men. You have rendered valuable service, and I desire to tender to you, and to the officers and men engaged, my thanks for what they have accomplished and the expression of my high appreciation of their soldierly qualities. You will please communicate my acknowledgements to Maj Genl Hampton and his cavalry, whose service on this occasion afford another evidence of the capacity and skill, and of the efficiency and bravery of his command
