The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Mrs. Nancy Marshall, Curator

Robert E. Lee’s Boyhood Home

Alexandria, Virginia

Dear Nancy:

I recently came across this galley proof of page 1, Volume I, “R. E. Lee”, which was inserted in my Vol. I of the first edition (handed down from my Father). As you can see, it is beginning to show signs of wear so I thought it best to frame it for preservation. Then I thought it most appropriate that it hang in our house in Alexandria. My brother, Sherwood, fully concurs. I believe his letter above is self-explanatory.

   Cordially,

             P. S. No, the framer did not “goof”; the proof was pulled in its crooked fashion.
