The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Boston Feby. 5th ’98

Charles Lee Esqr:

I have the honor to acknowledge your letter of the 28th. In Decr last, I paid you $400. Mr. Harrison has paid you $100, & Mr. Meredith has paid you $200. These sums, with $104 paid on Gen. Lee’s draft in favor of Mr. Washington, are all the money, except about eleven dollars. I have received on account of General Lee. I have never delayed remiting his money longer than was necessary to procure proper paper to remit. Except the debts intended to be paid by the No. Car. Paper, there is due to General Lee 875$ on Haskell’s note, exclusive of interest & 282$ due from Mr. Barrell, interest on his notes. I shall commence a suit as the trustees of Haskell’s property in the Virga. Lands. When Mr. Barrell will pay is uncertain. I shall not delay the remission of his money a moment after it is received. You will, if you please send this letter, or a copy, to Genl. Lee, who, might save himself the trouble of so often implicating me as a delinquent if he would take the trouble to examine the accounts I have sent him.
