            Know all men by these presents, that I Joseph Brittain of County aforesd. have bargained and sold to N. Shackelford a Negroe Woman slave Named Lucy for the sum of four hundred and Eighty seven dollars the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge – the right of said Negroe I do warrant and for we defend against any person or persons what we lawfully claiming the same in witness where of I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 23 August 1817.
