The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

To the Editor of the

            Alexa Gazette –

I have read in a recent number of your papers the Address & the people of Alexandria. to Genl. Washington, just after his departure from Mt Vernon, to assume the office of President.

On reading it, I was reminded of a conversation with my father, the late Edm? J. Lee, while I was a youth. Reading “Marshalls Life of Washington”: And as it may be interesting to your readers to know the author of that interesting paper, I will state the substance of that conversation, now quite distinctly recalled.

My father said that, he & his brother Genl. Henry Lee, were at the dinner table of their sister, Mrs. Fendall & mother of the late P. R. Fendall, in her house, corner of Oronoco & Washington Streets, Alexa, when a call was made on Genl. Lee by the Mayor of Alexa City. After an interview with the Mayor, Genl. Lee went to the side-table in the dining room, during the dinner hour, and wrote the address which was presented to Genl. Washington on behalf of the people of Alexa, by their esteemed Mayor John Ramsey, Esq.
