The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Head Quarters Lee’s Division,

Cavalry Corps, Army Northern Virginia,

Hamiltons Xing April 30th 1864

His Excellency,

Governor Wm Smith, of Va.,

Governor

I propose to have a review upon Wednesday next (4th inst) of the portion of my Cavalry Division in this vicinity – between 3000 and 4000 men – all Virginians – provided of course no movements interfere.

I would be most happy if you could be present upon the occasion. The troops could be glad to get a look at you. The train leaves Richmond at 6.30 A.M. and arrives here at 10.30. The time for its departure from here upon its return is 11.30 A.M. It could be delayed for the occasion for your return. Of course you will feel authorized to invite whom you wish.

Be kind enough to answer by return courier.

I am, with high respect

Your obt Servant

                                                                       Fitz Lee

                                                                        Major General
