The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My dear Sir

I am very much longer, in sending you, the enclosed paper, than I expected to be. In fact, I was unfortunate in leaving behind, at my home in Fredk County, the paper which I had almost completed, & could not quite finish, until I came here. It could not be found, by the friend, to whom, I entrusted the search and of course, I was obliged to make the whole, over again. Send for my Gd Fathers Bible &c &c. It seems to be, a simple affair, but it does require a great deal, of labor. I cannot conceive how you get thro’ it, for the Lees are a very prolific family. I hope it is not too late, but at all counts, I have done my best.

very respectfully & truly

yours

Mary D Gouverneur
