The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Accept my thanks for the copy photograph taken in Richmond 1865 of Gen Lee & Custis. I remember the occasion.

I think the photograph of the General makes him too old & too severe though a good likeness. There is another of him taken alone by Brady at same time in which he is so presented as standing with his hand resting on a chair & is the best by far I know. Brady is still in Washington & I have no doubt has still the negative. Gen Lee sent my father one, which I have now.

My family are at Lexington & all well

Very truly yrs

Fitzhugh Lee
