My dear Ed,
I must drop a line to thank you for the handsome book, which does do you much credit, & for which I am greatly obliged. Of course I will remember you with respecting the “gift.” If I had known you meant to introduce my notice of myself, I could have given you a line or two of my history respecting my service under the “Comr. of the Soldiers’ Home” at Washn, of when Genl. Scott was president & whose secy I was for two years receiving a salary (including that I got in the Adjt Genls Office) of $2,400, when the late miserable war obliged me to go to Richmond where, in a week after my arrival, I was appointed an Asst. Adjt. Genl. on Genl. Cooper’s staff. & assigned to the duties of “Judge Advocate”, which I discharged for about three years. On my return to Loudon I was twice elected Commonwealth’s Attorney of the County. & discharged its duties for 5 years. You can put that in yr. 2nd edition! which I hope may be called for. At any rate I trust this and may prove remunerative. I shall take pleasure in reading it when I am well enough. Hope you can make out – what I have managed to write. I can hardly write legibly.
