The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Office of

Blount & Chipley

Grocers and Commission Merchants,

Columbus, Ga. Mch 7 1867

Col Walter H Taylor

Norfolk

Dr Sir,

It becomes my pleasant duty as the representative of the ladies of Columbus for $1000 – the proceeds of same to be handed Mrs Jefferson Davis with all the love & Gods blessings that a devoted community can shower upon herself & her beloved & admired husband. This is but a beginning. Three times this amount is in hand but for obvious reasons will be sent in installments as rapidly as acknowledgments from Mrs Davis are received. Her reply you can enclose me. The ladies specially request that no publicity be given this enclosure or any that may follow. Gen Chilton assures me you will attend to this request with pleasure.

Very Respect[fully]

W. D Chipley
