Adjt. & Ins. Genl’s Office
Richmond, Decr 10 /61
Sir:
The Secretary of War is of opinion that you are only entitled to pay from the Confederate Government, from the time that you were appointed in its Army – and only then as First Lieutenant; with the addition of $35, for pay as A.D.C. if assigned to duty, as such, by General Lee.
I am instructed to add that if General Lee expresses to the Department the desire for your services as Asst. Adjt. General, you will be appointed accordingly.
Very respectfully
Yr. obt. servt.
