The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Amelia Ct House

4 Apl ’65

To the Citizens of Amelia Co:

The Army of N. Va has arrived here to day expecting to find plenty of provisions, which had been ordered to be placed here by R.R. Several days Since. But to my great Surprize & regret I find not a pound of subs for man or horse. I must therefore appeal to your generosity & charity to supply as far as each one is able the wants of the brave soldiers who have battled for your liberty for four years. We require meat, beef cattle, sheep, hogs, flour, meal, Corn & provender in any quantities that can be spared. The QrMr & Comms of the army will visit you & make an arrangements to pay for what they receive, or give the proper vouchers or certificates. I feel assured that all will give to the extent of their means.

Very respy,

R E Lee

Mr. Tyson
