Dear Sir:
I have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 23rd instant, with the accompanying package of accounts; among which, I notice the two checks: One on the “Bank of the Commonwealth,” Richmond, March 9, 1860, for $150 94/100; and the other on the “Exchange Bank of Virginia”, Lynchburg, Feb, 14, 1860, for $454 6/100.1 Your request in regard to the preservation of your vouchers will be remembered and complied with.
It is probable that I may have to accept your offer to explain any part of your accounts that I may not be able to understand, as I am not very familiar with men, places, and things in your part of the state; but will endeaver to give you as little trouble as possible in regard to them.

1. Lee is writing about the hiring of slaves from Arlington. The slaves had belonged to George Washington Parke Custis, who had died a few years before.
