The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

San Antonio Texas

My dear Genl

I am delighted at accosting you by your present title, & feel my heart exult within me at your high position.

I hope the old state may always be able to furnish worthy successes to the first chief of your new Dept: & that in your administration, the country & Army will have cause to rejoice that it has fallen upon you.

Please present my cordial congratulations to Mrs. J. & say that I fear, now that she will have you constantly with her, she will never want to see me again.

May happiness & prosperity always attend you in the sincere wish of very truly yours

R E Lee
