The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Manassas        28 May ‘61

I reached here dearest M this afternoon. I am very much occupied in examining matters & have to go out to examine the ground. Cousin J. tempts me strongly to go down, but I must resist for many reasons. If for no other to prevent compromitting1 the house for my visit would certainly be known.

I have written to you fully & to Cousin Anna. I am decidedly of opinion that it would be better for you to leave. On your account & Cousin Anna’s.

My only objection is leaving Cousin A. alone, if she will not go with you.

If you prefer Richmond, go with Nannie. Otherwise, the upper Country as John indicates. I fear I Cannot be with you any where. I do not think Richmond will be permanent.

Love & kisses to all.

God bless & preserve you all.

Truly,

R—
