Robert E. Lee to Laura Mason Chilton Wise, 1862 December 28

My dear Miss Laura1

I return my grateful thanks for the prayer book sent me by Miss Em & yourself. It will be very highly prized & I have read from it this morg the services of the day.

            With my best wishes for the happiness of both of you & the return of many happy new Years to each

1. Laura Mason Chilton Wise (1848-1914) was the daughter of Robert Hall Chilton and Laura Ann Thomson Mason Chilton (1820-1911). In 1869, she married Peyton Wise (1838-1897), a native of Accomack County, Virginia, who served in the 46th Virginia infantry during the war. After the war, Wise became a tobacco merchant in Richmond, where he died and is buried in Hollywood cemetery. Laura is also buried there, as are her parents.
