The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

General

Your note is rec’d. I regret I did not see you this morning. Genl Stuart is here, and thinks the enemy is moving towards Fredericksburg. They have placed pickets at the Ford of the Rappahannock, below Kelleys, which they had not done before.

I telegraphed Jackson to endeavor to operate through the mountains on his rear, but do not think he can accomplish much.

It would be too hazardous to cross your corps over the Rappahannock at this season, to operate on his rear, unless we had free passage of the river.

I think it better to operate upon them on their route from Fredericksburg. Be prepared for a movement at any time.

Very respectfully

Your obt Servt

R E Lee
