The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Guinea’s Depot

(11 am) 21st April 1862

Dear Charlotte,

Here I am. We were driven from the other side of the river by superior forces. I had one brilliant fight in which I killed some 30 of the enemy & drove them back twice. They charged me with a Regt of cav. God in his mercy protect you. We fought them all through the day, killing 3 & wounded 7. Killed a Lieut. got his horse & equipments.

Write to me at Milford Depot.

I send this to the care of Pa, as I do not know where you are.

Kiss my blessed boy for me, love to all.

Your devoted Husband

W. H F Lee
