The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Camp 27 Sept ‘63

My dear Son

I have recd your letter of the 25th for which I am much obliged. The boots reached me safely. Please keep the Coat & vest for the present. I will endeavour now if I ever get time to make out my tax account. Did I leave you money sufficient to pay for the coat &c. If not please let me know. I rejoiced over Braggs victory. It is a great Success & will be of great Service to us every way, though from the reports in yesterdays paper it looks as if Rosecrans had made a stand at Chattanooga. I hope Bragg will be able to cross the Tennessee below him & force him out. His Cavy ought now to break up his Communications force him back. I see Rob, Fitz, John & Henry occasionally the Cavy is near me now. They are all well. No advance has yet been seriously made, though all the preparations of Genl Meade indicate that purpose. Genls King, Heintzelman &c have been brought up to Culpepper & the Pontoon trains have again been brought forward from Centreville. I am glad to hear that there is Some prospect of a general exchange of prisoners. If Bragg has Captured any of importance it will facilitate matters. Goodbye my dear Son. Remember me in your prayers & always keep me in your heart.

your devoted father

R E Lee
