The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Camp 22 Decr ’63

I reached here safely dear Mary yesterday & though the Commencement of my journey seemed unpropitious, having been detained at the Depot at Richmond till after 8 am, we got into Orange earlier than usual. I thought a great deal of you during the journey & grieved over your suffering Condition. May God grant you speedy alleviation of your pain & restore you to Comfort & ease! I fear your proposed change of residence will not bring to you any additional relief, but on the Contrary more care, whatever advantages it may give to others. If you could take custis’ room, so far as a dormitory is concerned, it would be very Comfortable. But then you would have the inconvenience of the stairs. The back room down stairs would have some advantages. But I hope you will select one most ageable to you irrespective of the Considerations. I find all well here so far. All anxious to get away. I Can gratify some. I hope you will all have a happy Xmas & that your hearts will expand in love & gratitude to our Glorious Creator & Saviour for all his mercies & benefits, more especially for his salvation to which he has opened as a door. I shall be with you in mind though absent in body. May God have you all in his Holy Keeping! Truly & Sincerely yours

R E Lee
