The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Head Quarters Army No Va

February 2nd 1863

Lt Genl

J. Longstreet

Comdg Corps

The Mayor of Fredericksbg sends me a memorial in behalf of the Common Council & citizens of that place representing that the Va. Regt which has been acting as a Provost Guard there is they learn to be withdrawn. They ask that if consistent with the good of the service, the 30th Va regt may be sent to replace it, as it was raised there & is well known to the citizens. if not they desire the present regiment to be retained as it is becoming known to them & gives them satisfaction. You alone can judge of the advisability of complying with their request; and I therefore submit it to you, having assured them that you would make such provision for their protection, and take such measures for the promotion of the Sanitary condition of the town as well in your power.

I have the honor to be

            Very Respectfully

            Your Obt Svt
