The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Lt. Genl James Longstreet

Comg Corps

Genl

I have just heard from two scouts on the enemy’s right that a third corps of the army of the Potomac was embarking on the 15th inst. And from what they report I think it probable that farther embarkation of their troops’ will take place. They state that nothing is moving by land towards Washington & that the roads are perfectly impassable. I think you had better notify Hood to continue his march to the Chickahominy with a due regard to the comfort of his men & animals. I shall want you to go down as soon as you can make preparations, as they will require your care & I shall then feel better satisfied, though I am sorry to part with you. I will send your other divisions if circumstances require it

Very respectfully & truly

Yours

R E Lee

Genl
