The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

HeadQuarters ANVa

Jan 21st 1863

Lieut. Genl James Longstreet

Comg Corps

Your letter of this morning has been received. Capt Randolph reports that yesterday the enemy had brought on the upper Rappahannock bridges in the neighborhood of the Bank Mills or U.S. ford & that certainly a large force had moved up in the same direction. His pickets had not been advanced up to last night beyond Deep Run. But three scouting parties had moved up on the Morrisville Road during the day, as high as the grove. He says he cannot ascertain with accuracy the strength of the enemy in the vicinity of the U.S. Grimes & Richard Henry but it is certainly a considerable force, infantry artillery, cavalry, & wagons with materials for crossing the river. I concur with you in the opinion that the storm of last night will be a damper upon his enterprise, and it may only be intended as a feint at last. I will see Gen. Stuart in reference to the cavalry. But Gen W E Jones will have as much as he can attend to in the Shenandoah Valley, the enemy having vacated Moorefield & brought all his force into the Valley.

Very respectfully

R E Lee Genl
