The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Camp 9 Apl ‘64

The bag of socks arrived last evg my dear Mary with your note of the 6th. Who counted them for you? There were only 23 prs: & not 25 as you stated. I opened the bag & Counted them myself twice, then sent them over to Major Janney[1] who also Counted them & we both made them 23 prs: I am anxious to get as many socks now as possible, before active operations commence. As soon as the Stonewall brigade is supplied I will send the 61st Regt. I am glad you have heard from Mary & Edward. Tell the former how rejoiced I am to hear of her improvement, how much I love her & how often I think of her. Everything recalls her to me & I earnestly implore our Heavenly father that she may soon be restored to us well & happy as we can be in this world. Say to Edwd how much I am obliged to him for his affection & remembrance. I want for nothing but independence & peace to our distracted Country. The money F has transferred might as well I suppose remain in the bonds as they are. If you can take care of them you might as well retain them & use the interest, or give them to Custis as you prefer.

Give much love to all & believe me always yours

                R E Lee
