Commanding officers will thoroughly examine their lines this afternoon and cause them to be strengthened as far as practicable with abattis & othwerwise. They will see that the men are provided with rations and ammunition & issue instructions that one third of the officers & men in the trenches be awake & on duty throughout the night & or the alert against night or early morning attacks. This can be accomplished by judicious reliefs without too much fatigue to the men
