The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Head Qrs Lee’s Cav Div

Dec 14th 1864

My Dear Mother

As I have such a direct opportunity of sending you word how we all are I can not let it pass by with out writing you a few lines. I suppose you have heard how badly the Yankees have been behaving down here in the last two or three days & how hard we tried to punish them & how we failed. The weather was terrible & the men suffered horribly but were very anxious to get hold of the impudent foe who were laying waste all over country & spoiling the poor inhabitants of all they possessed.

The Cav were in time & in the right place but Genl Hill’s troops did not come up in time & as the enemy were in such large force we could do nothing with them. We are going to move tomorrow down to Hicks Ford on the Weldon R R until the road is completed up to this point, Stony Creek. It will take a week or ten days to repair all damages. Ask Agnes to let me know when my goods come from Wilmington & remember me to the blockaders & ask Shirley if he will soon wire walk out to Navy Hill stables & look after my horse some evening when he has nothing better to do, I send this up by ft & Frank Robertson who is suffering very much from Rheumatism I’ll ask him to go & see the Girls but I don’t know whether he will or not, but any how ask them to be civil for my sake.

John & Fitzhugh are well & good. I & all send a great deal of love to your family & every one else & believe me every your loving son

R E Lee
