The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Camp 2 Apl ’64

Your note of 30th dear Mary with the socks, arrived last evg. I have sent them to the stone wall brigade. The number all right, 30 prs: Including this last parcel of 30 prs: I have sent to that brigade 263 prs. Still there are about 140 men in that brigade whose homes are within the enemy’s lines & who are without socks. I shall Continue to furnish them until all are Supplied. Tell the young women to work hard for the brave Stonewallers. The bread you sent was very nice & we enjoyed it very much. But you must not deduct from your supplies. I do not See how you will be able to live in Richmond. You had better be looking out for some part of the Country where there are some provisions. I presume the officers cannot buy but one ration a day in Richmond now. How Custis, yourself, the three girls, Billy & Sally can live long on ¼ lb of bacon & 1 ½ pints meal I cannot see. The other officers of the mess will require all their allowance. I hope Shirley will give a crumb to Custis Morgan.1 He is in love & Can live on Sweet looks. Give much love to all & a kiss to Margaret. Fitzhugh was to have returned to day. We have had a continuing storm since yesterday & it is still snowing hard. May God have mercy on us all & bless you

very sincerely

R E Lee
