The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Gaines’ Mill 4 June ’64

On returning to camp last evg dear Mary I found your note & basket. Thank Mrs Stannard for the bread which is a great comfort to me. I am getting so well that I do not think I require the blackberry wine. I have enough of Port for the present. I think Mary had better use it. It will strengthen her. I am in hopes she will soon be well. I am glad to hear that you contemplate a visit to Fluvanna. I think you had better go as soon as you can. We are all in the hands of our merciful God, whom I know will order all things for our good, but we do not know what that is or what he may determine, & it behooves us to use the perception & judgment he has given us for our guidance & well being. It is evident that great danger is impending over us, & therefore those not required to meet it, or who might be overwhelmed by it should it fall upon us, should get out of harms way in time. I trust & believe he will save us in his own good time, & upon him is my whole faith & reliance. Give much love to my dear daughters & Custis. Our boys in the field are well. Fitzhugh with his division was engaged at Ashland evening before last, & last evg near Old Church. On both occasions doing well.

Very truly & affy

R E Lee
