The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Camp 11 Aug ‘64

My dear daughter

I have recd the Bible. The one sent me by Dr. Hoge was the one I desired being more portable. But the one you sent is the more agreeable for my eyes. I will Keep it though you may recollect I had to leave it before on account of its size. The Cousins are always in haste. I see no good of my sending them if they cannot await your notice. It is astonishing they should move with more velocity than you. Tell the ladies I have recd the shirts. Please do not make me any more. Tell Lizzie I have some nice apples ripe. If she will come & see me she shall have plenty for the mess. But she must Come quick as they are very perishable articles in Camp. I hope Sweet Annie has gotten well now she has gotten rid of her old Cousin. She will see more Cavy tomorrow. A letter from Uncle Carter reports all well. Lucy & Mildred were cut off from him for six weeks by Wilson’s raid. He has just gotten them back & is moving. Give my love to your Uncle Smith & regards to to Genln. To Custis Annie & Lizzie a Kiss. Truly your father

R E Lee
