The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Turnbulls[1] 29 Jany ‘65

My dear Mary

You will see by Major Janny’s acknowledgments that both of your bags have arrived safely & that all the socks previously recd have been distributed. The bag containing the 60 prs: jackett, shoes &c was sent by express which caused its delay. I return the bags. The straw bag has pretty much come to grass & is no longer reliable. I have no photographs. Daughter forgot them. We are enjoying ice water in abundance. Our neighbors also possess the same luxury. The Patapsco is frozen I understand so that steamers cannot ply between Baltimore & Norfolk. The Potomac must also be frozen, if it is true that the James is closed. If our men had only clothes & abundant food, I should not Care for the Cold. Give much love to the girls & all the household. I heard from Fitzhugh recently, all well. Tell Margaret & Carrie when tired of their beaux they had better come to see me.

With much affection

truly yours

R E Lee

[1] Edge Hill was the name of the house that belonged to William Turnbull. The house served as Lee’s headquarters from 1864 November 23 to 1865 April 2 during the siege of Petersburg. The house was later destroyed by Union artillery.
