The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Richmond, Va., January 16, 1865

General R. E. Lee,

                        Commanding &c., Petersburg, Va.:

The coordination that Butler’s division should return to you was understood by me to be part of the proposition, and will be distinctly stated. Young’s brigade will join the command as soon as it arrives on the field of operations. Will you notify the Adjutant-General, that the proper orders may be issued in time?

Jeff’n Davis

[Indorsement.]

Respectfully submitted for the information of the Adjutant and Inspector General, by direction of the President.

WM. Preston Johnston,

Colonel and Aide-de-Camp.
