The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My dear Captain

I have thought over the matter on which you asked my judgment when we met at Bryan’s, and I have asked the offhand opinions of others.

I think that General Robert Edward Lee is title enough. We would not say Oliver Cromwell Commander of such & such armies but the Protector Oliver Cromwell and in speaking of Turenne1 we say ‘Marshall Turenne’

Many many centuries will elapse before the enlightened traveller standing before monument or tablet in honour of our great Hero will have to ask “who is General Robert Edward Lee[?”]

With best wishes always

Yours very sincerely

Chas S Venable
