I recd this morning your letter of the 26th ult., expressing the wishes of the Washington Irving Literary Association of Chicago, that I would deliver a lecture in that city.

I request that you will assure the association of my appreciation of the compliment tendered me, and inform them that my engagements compel me to decline their invitation.
