The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Lexington, Va., 24 Dec. 1866

Mr A. W. Scott

Potosi, Washington Co., Missouri

My Dear Sir:

I am unable to give you the information you request in your letter of the 16th inst. I have not read either of the works, the Southern History of the war or the “Lost Cause.” My letter of October 1865 to Mr Pollard to which you refer, was in reply to one received from him before the publication of his last work, the “Lost Cause,” and was not intended as an endorsement of that or any particular work, but referred to any truthful history of the war.

Very respectfully, yr. obdt. Svt.

R. E. Lee
