The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My brother-in-law, Charles A. Marshall of Woodmore, Long Island, is considering presenting to “The Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation” Gen. Lee’s order No. 9, being the farewell order from Gen. Lee to his Army, written on the night before surrender by Col. Charles Marshall who was Military Secretary to Gen. Lee. This original document was composed and written on Army paper by Col. Marshall and contained a few intentional corrections in Gen. Lee’s handwriting and was signed by Gen. Lee the day of surrender at Appomatox [sic].

9 copies were made at that time and signed by Gen. Lee and given to the commanders of each division; therefore there are many claiming to own this original.

Mr. Charles A. Marshall is the younger son of Col. Marshall and he is willing to turn this over now to the Foundation, provided there is a fireproof room in which to keep it.
