The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Lexington, Va., 24 Dec. 1866

Mr. J. Greenwood

134 Michigan St., Chicago, Illinois

My Dear Sir:

I regret that my letter to Mr. Newberger has not reached him. On the 5th inst., I informed him that it would be impossible for me to accept the kind invitation of the Washington Irving Literary association, to deliver a lecture before them. In forwarding a copy of that letter, may I repeat the request I then made, and ask that you will be so kind as to thank the gentlemen of the association for the honor conferred on me by their selection, and express my regrets at my inability to comply with their wishes.

Very respectfully yr. obdt. Svt.

R. E. Lee
