The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Care of Davis & Thoroughenan

Virginia City, Montana Territory

My Dear Sir:

I have recd your letter of the 7th ult., transmitting your draft on New York for $376.50, for the benefit of the “Asylum for the orphan’s of the Confederate dead”; and will forward it, in accordance with your request, to the Treasurer of the Society.

The generous gift of the citizens of Virginia City, will give to the suffering children of the State, which bears its name, the comforting assurance that the sympathy of the truly charitable overcomes all distance, and is confined within no limits.

With thanks for your kind services, I am with much respect your obt svt.

(sgd.) R. E. Lee
