The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My Dear Sir:

I am very much obliged to you for the copy of the “Life and Campaigns of Genl Robert E. Lee” which you have kindly sent me. Every one must be so sensible of the faults and errors committed in a long life, that but few can read with pleasure their own history. I have not yet felt an inclination to commence the perusal of mine. Hoping that you have fulfilled your “aim at truthfulness,” and that your work may prove satisfactory to you, and those interested in me. I am gratefully, yrs.

(sgd.) R. E. Lee
