The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Mr. A. J. Wedderburn

No. 72 S. Calvert St.

Baltimore, Md.

My Dear Sir,

I have had to decline so many applications from comrades and friends to use my name as a reference, for reasons which I hope you will appreciate; that I think you will excuse me for not departing from the rule I have obliged to adapt. I can not pretend to be a judge of the business capacity of those with whom I have been associated during the past eventful years, and would therefore be unable to give any satisfactory information when applied to. Besides, it would so greatly enlarge my correspondence, already extended beyond my ability to attend to, that I should the more be unable to keep pace with it.

Wishing you every success, and all individual happiness, I am very respectfully, yr. obdt. svt.

(sgd.) R. E. Lee
