The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Lexington, Va., 8 April, 1867.

Mrs C. V. Baxley

Correspg Secty.  S. O. Association,

Baltimore, Md.

I have received your letter of the 2nd inst., and should very much regret if the money contributed by the citizens of Va. City for the erection of an asylum for the Orphans of the “Confederate dead” should not be properly applied. It was my object to place it in the hands of the proper society; and as I was only acquainted with a few of the individuals whose names were signed to the advertisements of the Society in the Baltimore and Richmond papers, among which I remember were Dr. A. G. Kimberly, Financial Secty, and H. C. Dallam, Counsellor, both of Baltimore. I wrote to Richmond to ascertain who was the right person to receive the money, and was informed that Mrs. E. A. Mears was Treasurer of the Society which had been chartered by the Legislator of Va., and to which the City Council of Richmond had granted lots for the erection of the necessary buildings. I therefore sent the money to her. There ought to be in my opinion but one society, and that society should have control of all the funds and means for the accomplishment of the object in view.

Very respectfully, yr. obdt. Svt.

(sgd.) R. E. Lee
