The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our curator, Colin Woodward, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

Mr. Harry Stone

New York, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Stone:

We thank you for giving us the opportunity to buy a gold star cut from the lapel of General R. E. Lee’s uniform, preserved in a specially made gold case, for which you ask seventy-five dollars.

We have in the Museum the very button to which you refer that he gave to Louise Triplett Haxall, and also a gold star from his uniform given to Laura Chilton, daughter of Gen. R. H. Chilton, who served on the personal staff of Gen. R. E. Lee.

In the Lee case here in the Museum will be found the uniform and sword worn by Gen. Lee at the surrender and also his field equipment.

Sincerely yours,

Susan B. Harrison

House Regent
