The Lee Family Digital Archive is the largest online source for primary source materials concerning the Lee family of Virginia. It contains published and unpublished items, some well known to historians, others that are rare or have never before been put online. We are always looking for new letters, diaries, and books to add to our website. Do you have a rare item that you would like to donate or share with us? If so, please contact our editor, Colin Woodward, at  (804) 493-1940, about how you can contribute to this historic project.

My dear mother,

I know I should have written to you before, but I have really not had the heart to write, & this note to you is the first I have attempted. I reached Rocklands safely Monday afternoon & found them all quite well. Delivered your notes & received thanks for you for them. I met Ms Bolling Haxall at Gordonsville. I left Rocklands Thursday morning at 5 o c. and arrived here the same afternoon about 4, o c. Every thing seems to have done very well in my absence. The carpenters were all at work & the farm had progressed about as well as if I had been here. I rode up Sat afternoon to the W. H. & spent the night & Sunday morning wrote Fitzhugh & came down home Sunday afternoon. F_ is very well seems a little uncertain as to the movements of his Dame.

He took me out to show me the improvements at St Peters. The change is truly very wonderful & as far as the wind goes I don’t know a handsomer church in the country. There is still great room for improvement on the outside & on the grounds but F_ hopes to get that done all in good time. I commenced seeding wheat to day, but was stopped this afternoon by the rain. It is now raining hard. I have never fully realized how great my loss is until now. Every hope, every plan ever wish, every prospect for the last four years here, have been for her, & now I have no one, nothing. I know it is all right, but it is so hard.

Good night good bye.

My best love to all
